About this template

Chancery is a complete website for a UK law firm, built around a fee estimator that turns an advertised fee into the number that leaves the client's account: a £350,000 purchase quoted at £950 costs £9,161 to complete, a multiple of 9.6.

The gap is not one line: VAT applies to the firm's fee but not to Land Registry registration, search fees or Stamp Duty Land Tax, so a quote that only adds VAT at the bottom overstates the bill. Excluding the tax, the legal cost to complete is £1,661, a multiple of 1.7 on the £950 fee; a buyer who budgets for the tax still under-costs by £711.

The same estimator prices probate and County Court claims. A £480,000 estate quoted at £1,800 totals £2,704, a multiple of 1.5; the nine grant copies cost £16 each ordered after submission rather than £2 with it, an eightfold difference a quote never mentions. An £8,500 small claims case quoted at £1,200 totals £2,241, a multiple of 1.9.

Every input is editable: purchase price, first-time-buyer status, estate value, grant copies, claim value. The output is always the firm's fee, VAT on it, every statutory line beneath, then two totals, legal cost to complete and total to complete, with the multiple between them shown largest.

The Land Registry, Stamp Duty Land Tax, probate and County Court figures are real, current UK rates, cited on the site; the firm, its solicitors and every fee it quotes are invented and disclosed as invented. Built for England and Wales only: the rate tables are English and Welsh statutory instruments, and a currency selector would only imply they travel.

Set in Grotesk with tabular figures on a warm paper ground with a claret signal; eight colour tokens carry the palette, each with a dark value, so it follows the visitor's system theme.
